Current Exhibit "Living Off the Land" Living Off the Land is the current exhibit at the Children's Museum of Durango. This unique exhibition educates children about the ecosystem in the Rocky Mountains, food products generated by both Ranches and Farms in the 4-Corners region, the benefits of organic growth practices, the effects of Carbon Footprints on our world and the importance of recycling materials, making nutritious food choices, as well as committing to the health of our community through food and clothing donation. Living Off the Land introduces these important concepts in an engaging and hands-on manner through its creative exhibit features. Exhibit features include : A natural food store, an ongoing canned food/clothing drive of which donated goods will reduce the cost of admission and benefit the Manna Soup Kitchen, a 10 foot x 7 foot mural of James Ranch which practices sustainable growth methods, a 55-gallon tropical fish tank, an oak tree-house reading hollow, a recycling center for multiple materials and information on how Carbon Footprints affect our world and how we can reduce our impact as individuals, a Farm/Ranch dramatic play area, a mural by a local Durango artist depicting the many unique animals in our ecosystem, an underworld area highlighting 'What Lies Beneath the Soil' including a gopher snake in an enclosed habitat, an infant/toddler cooking area and Farmer's Market, as well as an organic growth area for child planting of various seeds.
